The Surrendered

2011 Pulitzer Prize Fiction Finalist.

The Surrendered

Nostalgic romance drama with the horror of Japanese invasion to China and Korean War as background. While lavishly detailed, moving and well written, it is also burdened with too much character cliché: chick-magnet war vet, sex, orphans, reverends, sex, insecure men, lonely women, past and present lovers, more sex; basically those same people portrayed again and again in so many war related stories.
Surprising to find this novel as Pulitzer finalist. But would’ve been a bigger surprise if they picked this as the winner.
