2011 New York Asian Film Festival: The Yellow Sea (Hwanghae)

2011 Asian Film Award – Winner Best Actor.

1.Hiring an ex-cabby debutant hitman is not a sound investment. 2.Murder is much easier in theory than in reality. 3.Missing wife is the least thing you should worry while there’s an angry mob of mafia thugs wielding axes and daggers behind your back. 4.Bad guys, please use guns. More handy.

An unlucky robber runs into a crazy man, and gets lucky. Confused already? Don’t be. The story just slog around between some prepared unsurprising plot twists you don’t even have to sport a single brain cell. Just a few shrugs and raised eyebrows.

My favorite tune: Get A Life

There’s nothing more sad in music industry than bands staying together for money. Because there’s no other choice for the musicians. No other choice for their (remaining) fans.

The Psychopath Test

The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry

It is an awful lot harder, Tony told me, to convince people you’re sane than it is to convince them you’re crazy.

Back to the classic debate between what is considered sane and what is insane.
The main question is not about stigmatization or social conformity, it’s really about how many people can still choose between good and evil, then still have the capability to do what is right? Again, not ‘good things’ according to law, religions, culture, or some state of the art psychology theory. But according to the thing that separates us from the animal world. That thing we call humanity.
Humanity can’t be fabricated. We can’t fake good people. They just are. Tests aren’t needed.
Maybe it really is easier to find mad people these days. Jon Ronson should write a book about finding a perfect human being. That would be more challenging.

2011 New York Asian Film Festival: Battlefield Heroes (Pyeongyang Seong)

War is a huge mess and this one is beyond fucked up. Surely not all soldiers and generals are those macho-rugged-killing machines or greatness level achievers of a Zhuge Liang kind. Most of them were just some ordinary schmucks who didn’t have any reason to fight in the first place. No guts no glory? Consider this: is it heroic to die in some wretched battleground for nothing?

Sweeping and multi-layered like a great martial art story should be. Ladies and gentlemen, don’t judge a book by its cover. That is more than very true in this movie!

What feels worse than hell? Being single, unattractive, lonely…and horny. What feels even worst than that? When you can not feel anything anymore, and gave up all your hopes for love.
