My favorite tune: Walls

There’s no doubt, Stars is the Canadian New Order. Listen to ‘Hold On When You Get Love…’, and you will unmistakably hear echoes of ‘Bizzare Love Triangle’, complete with Peter Hook-y melodic bass lines. But wait. Unlike N.O., Stars have two vocalists. And their music shift around from electro pop to guitar or piano ballads, and even to Sonny & Cher-ish pop rock as in ‘Do You Want To Die Together?’
It’s perfectly fine to have a very wide genre range in one album, but it’s also good to have a tighter concept, like their previous installment ‘The Five Ghosts’. ‘The North’ has better songs and killer duets, and should be a better album. But without any solid main theme to wrap them together, at times it sounds like a cover-version greatest hits compilation LP.

My Rating: 6/10
